The City of Ballarat is seeking the public’s input as it begins to reimagine the Llanberris Athletics Reserve.

The outdated facility is being replaced by a new one currently under construction at the old showgrounds on Creswick Road and should be finished in time for the summer track and field season.

Council Chief Executive Officer Evan King says the site presents challenges given its past.

“It sits on top of the original Llanberris mine no.1 which was constructed in the late eighteen hundreds.”

“It sits on top of a mine, it does have levels of contamination on site, so we need to be mindful of that,” Mr. King said.

The newsroom understands the board of Athletics Ballarat will make a submission on the site’s future; at this stage it is unknown what they would like to see.
