Actor and comedian Aubrey Plaza has spoken publicly for the first time about the death of her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena. He died by suicide in January 2025 at age 47.
A Private Loss Becomes Public
Plaza shared her thoughts during a new episode of Good Hang, a podcast hosted by her friend and Parks and Recreation co-star Amy Poehler.
“It’s a daily struggle,” Plaza said. “But I’m grateful to be here still, moving through the world.”
The couple had been together for over 10 years and got married in 2021. They quietly separated in late 2024, months before Baena’s death.
Grief Like a Horror Film
Plaza compared her grief to scenes from the film The Gorge, a dark thriller she stars in this year.
“There’s a giant ocean of awfulness right there at all times,” she said. “Sometimes I want to dive into it, sometimes I run from it.”
Her honesty struck a chord with many fans around the world, including here in Australia.

Friends and Small Joys Help Her Cope
Plaza said a close group of female friends has been helping her through the healing process. They stay connected through group chats, Zoom calls, and support each other every day.
“They make me laugh really, really hard,” she said.
A Quiet Tribute
Plaza’s first public appearance after Jeff’s passing was at the SNL 50 special. She wore a colourful tie-dye shirt, which fans believe was a tribute to Baena, who loved wearing tie-dye during lockdown.
