‘We have to make a stand’ says Ballarat mayor, as locals struggle to cope with another murder

Ballarat’s Mayor Cr. Des Hudson has called on men to be better following a spate of murders in the region.

Rebecca Young, Samantha Murphy and most recently Hannah McGuire all victims of gendered violence.

21-year-old Sebastopol man Lachlan Young appeared in the Ballarat Magistrates Court today charged with murdering Ms. McGuire, he’ll return to court for a committal hearing on September 19th.

“The role for males across our community is we have to be better; we have to make a stand.”

“We have to call out inappropriate comments and actions, to be able to make sure it is safe for every person regardless of gender, of sexuality, of ethnic or religious background,” Mayor Hudson said.

The City of Ballarat’s messaging today was backed by the CEO of Womens Health Grampians Marianne Hendron, who emphasised this was not just a Ballarat problem.
