The location of Central Victoria’s very own “Big (insert overly large item here)” has been decided.
The Big Rainbow, created to symbolise inclusiveness, diversity, respect and pride for the LGBTIQA+ community and allies, will stand tall in Daylesford’s Victoria Park.
The town was named as the location of Australia’s next “big” tourist attraction in October of 2022, beating out shortlisted towns such as Katherine in the Northern Territory and Broome in Western Australia.
Hepburn Shire Council received 400 submissions from a survey on preferred locations for the structure, with Victoria Park the overwhelming response.
The rainbow, which is six metres high by 12 metres wide and painted in the colours of the 2018 Progress Pride Flag, has been donated by dating site Tinder, and will be accompanied with a $100,000 grant to be given to local community groups.
Council said that it understands there were some concerns with the installation, however the grant and added tourism benefits were accepted as positives for the local economy.
