Organisers are in a race against time to get athlete accomodation ready ahead of the 2026 Victorian Commonwealth Games.

Around 1100 permanent homes and apartments are planned for Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat, where the vast majority of competitions will be staged.

The games are due to kick off on March 17 2026, meaning organisers have less than three years to complete construction of new accomodations and sports facilities.

Some competitors will find themselves sleeping in converted garages and kitchens, in a bid to squeeze in as many people as possible; home kitchens will not be required because athletes will eat in specially-built dining areas within Games Villages.

According to the Herald Sun almost 100 4-bedroom homes, 400 3-bedroom homes and more than 350 2-bedroom houses will be constructed, along with more than 100 apartments.

The Ballarat construction site will be adjacent to the equestrian and industrial precincts, bounded by Latrobe, Brazenor, Winter and Learmonth Streets.

A fourth village will be built in Morwell.
