Ballarat Base Hospital’s power supply will be tripled in the city’s biggest upgrade in decades.

Work will begin soon on stage 1, upgrading above and underground cables, and replacing around 200 wooden power poles, some around 80 years old.

Powercor Head of Major Projects Marcus Olive says while the upgrade is to service the hospital’s half billion-dollar revamp, the whole Ballarat grid will benefit.

“This will lead to greater reliability; our assets won’t fail occasionally and have unplanned outages.”

“It will also help facilitate connection of other things like rooftop solar for some of our domestic customers, and as we move more and more towards electric vehicles it will enable you to bring in your EV charging station,” Mr. Olive said.

The network upgrade will take place in stages to minimise disruptions to local residents and businesses, with stage one expected to be complete by June and a second stage planned for 2024.
