Essential works got underway yesterday to clean water mains around Ballarat and district.

They’ll take about 8 weeks and impact areas such as Ballan, Creswick and Buninyong as well as most Ballarat suburbs.

Rachelle Anderson from Central Highlands Water says you may notice a chlorine smell and taste.

“We are altering the way we disinfect the water.”

“The normal process we use is called chloramination, what that means is we put chorine and ammonia in our water to help with disinfection.”

“For the program of works what we do is actually turn off the ammonia so the customer will just receive the chorine from the disinfected water supply,” Ms. Anderson said.

The water authority says the water will be safe to drink at all times and flow will not be affected.
