The author of new book ‘Scarred’, telling the stories of last year’s Bayindeen bush fires, says the people he spoke to are still coming to terms with the scale of them and the damage done.
Over 100 interviews took place with locals from Raglan, Beaufort, Elmhurst and Amphitheatre amongst others.
Ballarat local Hugh Carroll, who volunteered his time to write the book, says it was an emotional experience.
“I very quickly realized after one or two interviews that these people need to tell their stories,” he said.
“This is a huge part of the recovery program for them, and it wasn’t unusual to have people in tears telling their story.”
Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to restoring bushland campsites and community spaces around the Mount Cole area.
