It appears the chances of Ballarat’s historic replica Lydiard Street rail gates returning in an operational sense are all but gone.
The Department of Transport today saying putting them back is not safe, efficient or reliable.
Two options have been put on the table, both include the current boom gates staying and the old gates either static in the station precinct, or near their original location.
Other options have been taken off the table including returning the gates in a working fashion and closing the crossing permanently.
“The replica heritage gates are an important piece of Victoria’s rail history and there is a shared commitment to respecting and honouring their future,” said Department of Transport Grampians Chief Michael Bailey.
“That’s why we’re actively encouraging the community to share their views on the safe management of the crossing and a respectful future for the gates.”
The gates were destroyed when a V/Line train crashed into them in May 2020.
