Powercor has acknowledged recent tree-lopping works along Ballarat’s Avenue of Honour did not meet its standards, following criticism over the treatment of several commemorative trees.
The Arch of Victory Avenue of Honour Committee described the works as an act of vandalism, with President Garry Snowden raising particular concern over trees dedicated to three Ballarat nurses who served during World War One.
Powercor Head of Vegetation Management Ayce Cordy said contractors were regularly instructed to take a high level of care at sensitive sites.
“We share the community’s disappointment over the treatment of a significant tree on the Avenue of Honour” Mr Cordy said.
“We regularly instruct contractors on the need to show a high level of care when managing sensitive sites and have stressed that this work does not meet our processes or standards.”
“Tree cutting is important to keep power safe and reliable, but this work should have been done in a way that respected the importance of these trees.”
The Committee has called on Powercor to review its practices and consider alternative methods for future maintenance along the historic Avenue.
