Ballarat Police say they continue to see locals driving distracted and over the speed limit, as a Victorian police operation continues over the ANZAC Day long weekend.

Police will be out on the roads statewide as part of Operation Compass, targeting speeding and impaired drivers.

91 lives have been lost on Victorian roads so far this year, compared to 90 at this time last year.

Despite no fatalities or serious crashes in the local area during the Easter break, Acting Senior Sargeant for Ballarat Police, Nathan Monteduro, says drivers should expect to be tested when out on regional roads.

“The risk is still there even though we haven’t had some terrible outcome, which is a great thing, [but] there’s still indication there that people are doing the wrong thing,” he said.

“We need to make sure that drivers [are] doing the right thing all the time for us.”
