As the nights get a little more chilly the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action has issued a campfire warning.

Senior Forest and Wildlife Officer Scott Nicholson says with another busy Easter long weekend ahead across the Ballarat region it’s important to be aware of your surroundings.

“We advise people strongly to work out where they’re heading and what fire district they’re going to be in to determine whether or not fire restrictions are still in place, and also have a really good handle on the weather.”

Nicholson adds that downloading the Vic Emergency app is a vital step before hitting the road.

“(Travellers) can easily download on their phone and set up a holiday watch-zone for where they’re going to be. That app will alert them to any fire that may be in the area that they’re camping in or surrounding area.”

Fire danger periods have started coming to an end around our region, meaning restrictions have begun lifting.

Fire danger period restrictions finished in the Loddon and Campaspe Shires on April 3rd.

The fire danger period in the Central Goldfields Shire will come to a close on Wednesday April 12.
