A group of citizen scientists is helping unlock why Lake Wendouree is so popular for the super cute Rakali.
The Rakali, unglamorously known as an Australian “water rat”, is a small Otter with thick, soft fur, prominent whiskers, partly webbed hind feet and a furry tail.
Geoff Williams from the Australian Platypus Conservancy says a group of locals has been closely watching the cute creatures for several months and they’ve discovered a healthy population right across the lake.
“Already we’re getting a pretty confident picture that this is one of the best populations in Victoria and possibly the best in Australia.”
“So, if you want to see this species come to Ballarat, it’s a fabulous place to see them.”
The next group watch survey is scheduled for May 20th with more volunteers welcome.
