COVID continues to impact Ballarat’s healthcare sector

Ballarat has added another 258 COVID cases in the latest 7 day reporting period.

It takes the cities all time tally since the pandemic begun to more than 52,000, although it’s thought the real number could be far higher due to under-reporting.

Dr Rob Grenfell from Grampian’s Health says the virus is still causing problems in the healthcare sector locally with ongoing staff furloughing.

“We’ve got hospitalisations across the whole Grampians network which challenge us because it means if someone’s in hospital with COVID we’re unable to use those beds for other things that need to happen.”

“And added to that our staff are also contracting COVID and they can’t work for seven days whilst they’re active with the disease, so staffing is a major challenge for us as well,” Dr Grenfell said.

Sadly, 15 Victorians on average died each day from COVID over the last week.
