Council urged to do more to protect Ballarat’s black swans

A local wildlife carer has urged Ballarat council to do more when it comes to protecting our famous black swans from cars.

A temporary fence currently sits between the birds and busy Gillies Street; however, the swans move around it in search of food.

Melissa Morey says she’d like to see council trial leaving some areas of grass a little longer away from the road, so the swans get attracted to it and feed in safety.

“We would absolutely love to see the council be proactive and trial that,” she said.

“The [swans are] crossing into the median strips to try and get the longer grass.”
