Ballarat’s Victoria Park is about to become a home-away-from-home for up to 300 firefighters with a basecamp quickly being set up.

Large marquees to accommodate the CFA and other support agencies will be set up by Wednesday on ovals 7 and 8 on Military Drive opposite the Ballarat Dog Obedience Club pavilion.

Both pavilions will be set up as command stations.

The camp will provide much-needed facilities to firefighters who are currently working to contain fires to the west of Ballarat including showers, toilets, laundry, kitchen and accommodation.

There will be road closures in and around the park beginning today to facilitate the traffic management needed for the camp.

CFA Deputy Chief Officer West Region, Brett Boatman said there were no fires in Ballarat and the base camp will act as a hub for movements to fire grounds.

The hub will potentially be in place for a month.
