4th COVID wave sees cases jump 30% in Ballarat

Ballarat’s Covid cases have jumped by around 30% in the last week.

340 new infections were reported in the 7 day period as the 4th wave continues to gain momentum, that’s an average of more than 48 new cases a day.

State-wide cases were up 23% with hospitalisations up over 28%.
 
Grampian’s Health says its hospitals, such as the Ballarat Base, have not been immune from the recent jump in COVID hospitalisations.

Chief Strategies and Regions Officer Dr Rob Grenfell says their testing numbers back that up.
 
“Because we test our aged care residents and our staff, we actually do have a fair idea of how many staff members are coming out as well.”
 
“We are seeing a significant number of our workforce having to stay at home for a quarantine period,” Dr Grenfell said.

On average, 7 people died from COVID state-wide per day in the last week.
