The Smythesdale Country Market will be hosting a Landcare-themed market on Saturday April 20th, providing a range of engaging activities suitable for all ages.
For the past two years, The Friends of the Woady Landcare group has been picking up where the Smythesdale Progress Association and the former Dales Landcare group left off.
Their mission?
Reviving the Woady Yaloak River in Smythesdale.
It’s not just about the environment—it’s about keeping our community thriving.
The Smythesdale Country Market will host the Friends of the Woady for the April market, giving attendees a chance to meet the volunteers, and promote Landcare initiatives as a beacon of hope, advocating against the prevailing sense of environmental doom.
Bill McNeill, Smythesdale Country Market organiser and Friends of the Woady volunteer, wants people to see that Landcare is all about practical action, rather than focusing on environmental ‘Doomism’. ‘Landcare embodies a proactive approach, empowering individuals to make tangible differences in their communities and environment. The April Market is a chance to celebrate the spirit of Landcare and embrace a future filled with optimism and getting stuck into something practical,’ Bill says.
Visitors can look forward to a diverse range of activities throughout the day dedicated to sustainability and the environment.
Leigh Catchment Landcare Group will present a hands-on display, allowing visitors to identify water bugs and understand their role in our ecosystem.
Local environmental consultant, Ray Draper, will be sharing his research insights, shedding light on the ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the Woady Yaloak River.
For the young eco-enthusiasts, join Bettina Atwill for a range of interactive and educational environmental activities.
From bubble wands to upcycled gardens, the eco-friendly workshops will educate and inspire.
In addition to these exciting activities, the market will also feature live performances from local duo The Nancyboys, a live beehive display, and an array of local stallholders, artisans, and second-hand sellers.
The Smythesdale Country Market will be hosting this special event on Saturday April 20th, from 9am – 1pm.
