For generations of Aussies, the idea of heading into the bush and stumbling across a life-changing piece of gold has felt like something from another era.

But for one amateur prospector, that dream just became very real.

The anonymous Broken Hill man was searching on Mount Stuart station near Tibooburra, in far north-western New South Wales, when his metal detector picked up a relatively faint signal. He almost walked straight past it.

After digging roughly 100 millimetres into the ground, however, his detector began “squealing”. A scrape of the dirt then revealed a tiny flash of yellow.

What emerged was anything but tiny.

The quartz-speckled nugget weighs an enormous 1,218 grams, with testing showing it contains approximately 940 grams of pure gold. Based on the spot price, it’s estimated to be worth between $150,000 and $160,000. If sold to a collector, the lucky finder believes it could potentially command as much as $200,000.

Appropriately, he’s named his extraordinary discovery the “Tibooburra Spud”.

The find is particularly remarkable given just how uncommon nuggets of this size are. Broken Hill prospecting supplier Greg Spangler told ABC News that in more than 20 years selling equipment, he had only seen one other person uncover a nugget weighing over a kilogram.

But perhaps the most fascinating part of the story is how little the psychology of Australia’s gold rush has changed.

When gold rushes swept Australia in the 1850s, people travelled from around the world chasing the possibility of sudden wealth. The movement dramatically increased Australia’s population, boosted the economy and helped shape a new national identity.

More than 170 years later, that fantasy still resonates. The tools have changed, but the appeal of taking a chance, escaping everyday life and possibly returning home considerably richer hasn’t.

And with gold prices soaring to extraordinary levels in 2026, prospecting is once again attracting attention. Greg Spangler says rising prices have helped drive renewed interest, although the hobby also offers fresh air, exercise, peace and the opportunity to get the whole family involved.

It gives this incredible discovery an unexpectedly modern edge. At a time when plenty of Australians are dreaming about the windfall that could transform their finances, the “Tibooburra Spud” is a real-life reminder of why stories of sudden fortune remain irresistible.

And the prospector’s advice for anyone tempted to try their luck?

“Just keep walking, keep swinging [and] keep digging every target.”
