Warner Bros Has Until December To Make A Deal
After becoming one of the biggest movies of 2023, you would think a Barbie sequel would be a guaranteed slam dunk.
But three years later, Barbie 2 is still yet to be confirmed and a major disagreement behind the scenes could put the entire project at risk.
The original film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling made more than $1.4 billion at the global box office and became a huge pop culture moment. It also earned eight Academy Award nominations.
Despite that success, Margot, Ryan and director Greta Gerwig were only signed on for one movie.
The Clock Is Ticking
Warner Bros is reportedly still trying to secure deals with the stars and creative team, but negotiations have hit a major roadblock.
Ryan Gosling is reportedly seeking a huge pay increase to return as Ken, while Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig are also yet to agree to new contracts.
Adding even more pressure, Warner Bros reportedly has until December to finalise a deal. If an agreement cannot be reached, the rights could return to toy giant Mattel.
That could mean Warner Bros loses the chance to make a sequel using the original cast and creative team.
So Will Barbie Return?
Greta Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach are reportedly believed to have an idea for a second movie, but the story is being kept under wraps while negotiations continue.
With so much money and popularity behind the first film, fans will be hoping everyone can find a way to make it work.
Because after all, Barbie 2 seems like a pretty obvious idea… and we are definitely ready to go back to Barbieland.
