Doom Scrolling social media used to be a reliable comfort. You would open your phone expecting to see a friend’s new puppy, a human cooking a normal meal, or someone explaining a genuine hobby. Now? It feels like wading through a digital swamp of AI video slop. We are suddenly surrounded by faces that do not quite blink right, kitchens that defy the laws of physics, and narrators who sound like a podcaster trapped in a tin can. If you are sick of not knowing what is real or not, you are not alone. Let’s look at how to identify this synthetic noise and, more importantly, how to use your settings to filter it out.
The Story Behind the Synthetic Flood
Why does this digital landfill exist in the first place? It boils down to engagement farming and ease of access. With the explosion of generative video tools, anyone can churn out hundreds of hyper-realistic videos in minutes. Anonymous accounts use these tools to game the algorithm, generating endless streams of cheap content to harvest views and likes.
We went from carefully curated human moments to an avalanche of machine-made filler almost overnight. Social media platforms naturally prioritise keeping your eyes glued to the screen, and if a slightly unsettling AI video keeps you watching, they will continue to serve it up. But the novelty has worn off. We want human connection back, not a server farm’s best guess at human behaviour.

Spotting the Slop: How It Works
Before you can banish the bots, you need to know exactly what you are looking for. The technology has evolved past the obvious extra fingers of 2024, but AI still struggles with the subtle physics of being human.
First, watch the eyes and face. Real people blink spontaneously; AI characters often stare blankly or blink in a mechanical, lifeless rhythm. Look at the hairline and jawline for subtle blurring where the generated face meets the neck.
Next, check the background. AI is notoriously bad at object permanence. You might see a doorway that leads nowhere, patterns on a shirt that constantly shift, or background objects melting into each other when the camera moves.
Listen closely to the audio. Human speech has natural breathing patterns. Cloned voices often miss these subtle intakes of air, or they insert breaths at the wrong syntactic moment. Finally, trust your gut. If a video gives you a strange, uneasy feeling for no clear reason, your brain is likely picking up on micro-movements that do not align with natural biology.
Taking Out the Digital Trash
Once you have spotted the fake, how do you scrub it from your digital life? It takes a bit of manual labour, but you can train your algorithms to reject AI.
If you are on TikTok, you are in luck. They recently introduced an AI-generated content slider tucked away in the Settings under Content Preferences, then Manage Topics. Slide that switch to “off,” and the app will actively strip out videos flagged with AI watermarks. Pinterest has a similar escape hatch under Refine Your Recommendations, letting you turn off GenAI images for specific categories like home decor and beauty.
For platforms like Instagram and YouTube, you need to be aggressively dismissive. Every time an AI video pops up, do not just scroll past it, hit the three dots and select “Not Interested.” Go into your privacy settings and mute keywords like “AI”, “generated”, “synthetic”, and “midjourney”. If you want to take it a step further on a desktop browser, third-party extensions like AI Content Shield act as an ad-blocker specifically for AI, hiding synthetic videos across YouTube and major social networks.
Reclaiming Reality
Scrubbing the synthetic noise out of my daily scrolling routine was incredibly satisfying. My feeds feel like a breath of fresh air again. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate AI as a tool, I just don’t want to be bombarded with and and I want clear guidlines showing when it has been used.
While generative video will only get more sophisticated, our tools to avoid it are thankfully improving. A human-only internet might take a little extra effort to maintain right now, but it is absolutely something to look forward to. Protect your peace, tweak your settings, and enjoy the beautiful, imperfect reality of real people.
