Works will begin at the end of June at the Sturt/Russell/Morrison street intersection. This is the next stage of the Sturt Street West improvements package.
This upgrade will include the extension of the existing east-bound right turning lane from Sturt Street into Russell Street and adding a left-turn lane from Russell Street into Sturt Street.
These works are in readiness for traffic signals to be installed later this year.
After the traffic signals become operational, the school crossing near Loreto College will be removed and students and other pedestrians will be encouraged to use the signalised intersection to cross Sturt Street.
Benefits of upgrading this busy intersection include improving traffic flow, particularly during peak work and school times, and improving the safety for cyclists and pedestrians. Construction of the turning lanes is expected to be completed in August, subject to weather.
Construction will be carried out between 7am and 6pm. Traffic management will be in place and the speed limit in the area will be reduced to 40km/h.
To minimise impacts on school traffic in the area, some of these works are being carried out during the upcoming June/July 2020 school holiday period. When school returns on Monday 13 July 2020, work times will be limited to between 9.30am and 2.30pm to again minimise the impact on school traffic.
Construction of the turning lane works is expected to be completed in August, subject to weather.
