The Australian National Dictionary Centre has named their 2020 word of the year, and it’s no real surprise that like everything in 2020, it’s all about COVID.
The distinctly Australian abbreviation of self-isolation - “ISO” – has been named this year’s winner. Iso scored extra points for its use in forming compounds such as “iso-baking” and “iso-fashion”. It topped a shortlist of 5 hot contenders, 4 of which were COVID related while the fifth related to the 2019-2020 bushfire season.
