Deakin University has partnered with Country Press Australia to commission a study into regional newspapers.
The three year project aims to develop a new map to help support country-based media survive the digital era.
Project leader, Associate Professor Kristy Hess, says regional media plays an important role in local towns and communities, but that there's also challenges faced by news outlets in the digital space.
The announcement of the study comes after recent sweeping changes in regional news structures, including the layoff of four regional TV news rooms, and the Nine-Fairfax merger that later saw 160 regional papers, including The Courier in Ballarat, sold to former Domain boss Antony Catalano.
