Wendouree cricketer Kento Dobell has qualified for the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in an unorthodox way.

Dobell travelled to Japan to play for their side in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup East Asia-Pacific Qualifier in Sano, with the Japanese team scheduled to face Papua New Guinea on the final day.

The Papua New Guinea team ended up forfeiting their clash against Japan, due to not having enough players after 11 of them were suspended after being caught shoplifting in the days prior.

The forfeit means Dobell and his Japanese teammates have landed themselves a spot in next year's World Cup tournament to be held in South Africa from January 7 to February 9.
