Locals and kindergarten children will get their hands dirty this morning (June 13) as they help plant native trees as part of a joint project.

State Library Victoria and Federation University are undertaking a tree planting initiative with thousands of trees to be planted to expand and protect the existing arboretum near the Library’s new storage facility at the uni's Mt Helen campus.

It is the second state-of-the-art storage facility for State Library Victoria to be built on the site, with the existing one holding more than half of their collection, including newspapers, books, journals, textiles, paintings and furniture.

The new facility which is due to open later this year will have additional storage of 25 to 30 linear kilometres, which is the equivalent of driving from Ballarat to Clunes or running 175 lengths of the MCG.
