It's estimated between 20% and 30% of local potato growers were severely impacted by last week's storm.

48mm of rain was recorded at Ballarat airport although there's reports of falls of over 200mm in areas close by, large hail also fell.

Ballarat Potato Growers Association Chair, Chris Stephens says its been tough on around 40 growers in the district.

"I spoke to a few growers on the weekend and the mental strain on them is immense."

"I lot of them are very disheartened and devastated, it might take some growers 5 to 10 years to recover from this," Mr Stephens said.

The BPGA estimates the local crop (based on retail fast-food restaurant prices) is worth around $1.3 billion annually.
