It's been an uncomfortably hot night in Ballarat

At midnight it was still 28 degrees with the mercury only falling to 21C at 4.30am

We can expect a blazing top of 37C today before a cool change rolls in late afternoon, bringing with it a nearly100% chance of heavy rain fall. Winds will be northwest to northeasterly at 25 to 35 km/h tending southwesterly in the late afternoon then becoming light in the late evening.

Both Mildura and Melbourne today are expected to hit 39C.

Australia Day tomorrow will be a whole lot more comfortable in Ballarat with a top of 20 degrees forecast along with showers.

A total fire ban is in place for the North of the state today which excludes Ballarat and the Central District with the CFA on high alert.
