Pet adoption surges in Ballarat despite pandemic

The current coronavirus lock down in Ballarat has seen the city's animal shelter almost cleaned out of pets awaiting adoption.

There's currently only 5 cats and less than 15 dogs waiting to find a new home.
Cat numbers have been as high as 200 recently.

Staff initially feared pet ownership could become an issue for families in hardship, but to date it has been the opposite and the community has been embracing pets into their homes.

You can still adopt a pet at the moment but you'll need to make an appointment.
