Ballarat police are reviewing footage of a white supremacist march through the city at the weekend.
Dozens of people from the National Socialist Network wore all black clothing and carried a banner with the words ‘Australia for the White Man’, as they marched down Sturt Street yesterday afternoon.
Speaking to the media, Secretary of Victoria’s Police Association Wayne Gatt says he wants to see laws changed to prevent it happening again.
“Police are limited to what they can do here.”
“At the end of the day if it was up to us, it would be dead set illegal, you would not be allowed to do it.”
“But it’s not up to us, it’s up to government,” Mr. Gatt said.
Meantime, the condemnation of Sunday’s rally in Ballarat continues to flow.
The gathering in the CBD, which happened to be on the 169th commemoration of the Eureka Rebellion, has made national news headlines.
Western Victorian MP Joe McCracken has called the march un-Australian, saying he cannot support people who seek to divide the community by race.
