Grampians Health issues Mozzie warning as MVE edges further south

Murray Valley encephalitis has made its way to Western Victoria.

Grampians Health says it’s been picked up in Mosquito’s in Horsham as a result of routine surveillance.

There are currently no human cases, the last was reported in 1974.

Though infections are often mild, in some cases, Murray Valley encephalitis virus can cause fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and muscle aches. In serious cases, the virus can cause encephalitis (infection of the brain).

There is no vaccine available for the virus.

The health care provider has urged the use of DEET repellents when outdoors and to wear light, long, loose-fitting clothing.
