Ballarat’s first ever festival dedicated entirely to dark beer will be held at the Mining Exchange on Saturday as part of the annual Winter Festival.
14 independent Victorian breweries will feature at the ‘Obsidian Dark Beer Festival’ including Ballarat’s Dollar Bill and Red Duck Brewing along with 28 dark beers.
Organiser Tom Madden says supporting independent brewers and not the Japanese giants is vital.
“It’s definitely a challenge, they’re doing very well at show boating and making it look like they’re part of the independent scene.”
“Really the only way around it I guess is to look for the independent seal on the packaging,” Mr. Madden said.
Tickets include samples of all 28 dark beers (some available for the first time), a festival glass, masterclasses, entertainment and access to spirits, food and a palate cleansing can bar.
