The CEO of Commerce Ballarat, Jodie Gillett, says the slow approval of liquor licenses in the city is hampering some businesses.
The newsroom understands there is a backlog of about 1000 licenses statewide with the time it takes to approve them blowing out to 6 months.
“As far as we are concerned, and other business groups are concerned, we just need to fix it.”
“We need our businesses; they need our support right now and we want to encourage new businesses.”
“We don’t want to see them under huge financial pressure before they even open their doors,” Ms. Gillett said.
It’s understood Western Victorian Liberal MP Joe McCracken recently raised the matter in parliament.
