As spring approaches and visitor numbers from Melbourne steadily rise, the Ballarat Tramways Museum says it is actively recruiting more volunteers to expand its operations.

Museum President Paul Mong, who has been a volunteer since the age of 10, says they’d like to open an extra day a week, but a shortage of volunteers is holding them back.

Last year the museum moved into a new $2 million state-of-the-art facility next to their original home that dates back to the 70’s.

Volunteer roles include tram drivers and conductors, restorers, archivists and museum front of house staff amongst others.

The museum has around 20 trams on display with fundraising underway to bring ‘tram 34’ home, which currently resides in Adelaide.
