A rare ‘blue’ supermoon will be visible over Ballarat tonight and tomorrow night, cloud cover permitting.
The moon will look about 14% bigger than normal although unlike the name suggests it won’t be blue.
Swinburn University Astronomer Dr. Emma Ryan-Webber, who attended Loreto College in Ballarat, says using Sturt Street’s buildings as a backdrop could make for some amazing photos.
“I’m thinking if you’re looking down Sturt Street that it’s really nicely aligned along the east-west.”
“So, if you are up the west end of Sturt Street and look towards the east, you might be able to clip the top of some buildings there at around an hour after sunset,” Dr. Ryan-Webber said.
‘Blue moon’ has been used as a phrase that describes when two full moons fall within the same calendar month, however only the second full moon is described as a blue moon.
The next supermoon is due on September 29th, which will be the last for the year.
