Ahead of the school holidays, ‘ready to catch’ rainbow trout are being stocked into local lakes.

The stocking program aims to encourage families to go fishing, with the trout suitable for kids or those fishing for the first time.

Across the region, 500 trout will be stocked in lakes in Ballarat’s Victoria Park, 200 at Lake Calembeen in Creswick, 300 at Lake Jubilee in Daylesford, 250 at Lake Esmond, 200 at the Haddon Reservoir and a further 200 into The Gong at Buninyong.

The state-wide stocking program released almost 10 million fish in 2022, with the majority produced at Snobs Creek and the VFA’s native hatchery at Arcadia, near Shepparton.

In family fishing lakes, a daily bag limit of five trout applies, of which only two trout can exceed 35 centimetres.
