George Pell, the Ballarat born Cardinal of the Catholic Church, has died aged 81.
Cardinal Pell died last night in Vatican City, reportedly due to complications from hip replacement surgery.
Controversial in recent years, he was convicted of molesting two teenage choirboys in the sacristy at St Patrick’s Cathedral while he was Archbishop of Melbourne in 1996.

Having maintained his innocence, his conviction was quashed in 2020.
As a young manin Ballarat Pell attended Loreto Convent and St. Patrick’s College, playng AFL for the latter as a ruckman in the first XVIII from 1956 to 1959.
